Mission
Good design is possible - and necessary - at every scale. From the detailing the minutiae of a luxury estate to a single-room renovation, every inch and every decision matters. Good design isn’t tied inexorably to an limitless budget, but comes from thoughtful decision making that takes into account comfort, aesthetics, and longevity. Good design, stylistically and physically, should last. JMA believes that good design has inherent value, and applies a deep level of care, with knowledge gathered through years of work on high-end homes, to every project. Whether you want to create your dream estate or simply need to make your current space work better, JMA is excited to hone your vision and help bring your project to fruition.
Jonathan Miller, AIA Architect & Founder
About the Architect
Originally from Amesbury, Massachusetts, Jonathan Miller has been working to create custom homes for more than fifteen years, but he began to imagine how the world around him could be molded at a very young age. His professional career began at Northeastern University, from where he holds a Bachelor of Science in Architecture and Urbanism, and a Master of Architecture. His studies focused on a sensitivity to context, and culminated in a proposal for a new zoning ordinance for the Newmarket neighborhood in Boston, MA. From there he joined Maryann Thompson Architects in Cambridge, MA where he worked on a variety of project types, from a historic Martha’s Vineyard renovation, to sprawling contemporary homes, a K-12 school master plan, and a net-zero teaching science building. Jonathan then moved to Frank Shirley Architects, where he became a project manager. It was here his detail-oriented nature and passion for traditional design transformed into an architectural practice expert in fine home-building and historic renovations. His particular abilities thrived while navigating the complex and murky mire of city approvals, centuries-old structure investigations, and the ever-evolving energy codes. From a 17th century Cape Cod home, to 19th century Victorian masterpieces, Second Empire row-houses, ground-up new construction, and everything in between, every project under his leadership was treated with the utmost care. After over a decade with Frank Shirley Architects, he founded J.S. Miller Architecture.
At JMA, Jonathan takes his experience working on the historic homes of New England and transforms it into projects that are timeless - both in their design and their longevity. His study of the best of what traditional design has to offer has led to projects imbued with beauty, comfort, and function, and that will stand the test of time.
